I think a lot of us prefer to stay in something we understand and enjoy. The past couple of years was a journey and a learning experience for me. My friends noticed the transformation. They watched as I earned a Master’s degree. Then they witnessed me upgrade my career. When I went through this transformation, I had friends who abandoned me and others who supported me. Nevertheless, when confronted by one of my close friends as to why I decided to treat myself to a better career, I realized I never took the opportunity to understand why I did it. I liked the experience. asked me why I finally decided to treat myself to a better career. I wrote a list of reasons why I finally decided to treat myself to a better career and share my story with others in hopes that it will inspire them to do something they’ve dreamed of doing.
Change is Good
When I was younger, I used to think that change was a bad thing. In some aspects, it can be bad especially if it has something to do with love or a peace of mind. However, changing your outlook on life isn’t necessarily like you’re giving up on yourself. I think of it as more of a transformation than a change. Your improving yourself. While keeping your morals, looking to improve your life isn’t something you should be afraid of. The process, while scary at first, can be liberating once you embrace it. As for me, I genuinely felt like I needed a change. I was stuck in a rut, a dead end job, and didn’t feel like I was making a difference in people’s lives. I get it. We aren’t all inspired by helping others, but this isn’t the only reason to be motivated. In addition to upgrading my career, I started to earn more money too. It’s interesting how one good thing leads to another.
I Deserved It
The first step into making a change is understanding that you deserve it. I can’t tell you how many of my friends have kept the same outlook on life because they felt it was unattainable or that they deserved the punishment. Once you realize that your life is valuable, regardless of what you do for a living, than you can see yourself in a better light. Once I realized that I deserved the best in life, I transitioned my thought process into improving myself. The one element you need to remember is that if you have one bad day, it shouldn’t mean that your life should be bad too. We live on this earth as a journey. The good comes with the bad and vise versa. You deserve what you work hard for.
I Wanted to Help Others
A huge motivator for me is helping others. After understanding what motivated me, I wanted to make a change to better my position in helping others. A career change is what I wanted. Since we spend most of our time at work, I realized I wanted my career to revolve around helping people. I am a big believer that if you help others, they will help you too. I know that every now and then we stumble upon people who may have hurt us. However, this doesn’t mean we should give up on them. In general, people can be good if given the opportunity.
It was Easier than I Thought
The one scary thought I had was that the journey would be scary. The change might make me regret making the choice in the first place. I was wrong. What I discovered is that are resources everywhere. The beautiful component of my transformation was access to the internet. I read other people’s journeys and their struggles. Additionally, I learned about the online courses that were available. I realized the transformation wasn’t as far away as I thought it’d be. My fear was stemmed by the idea that I couldn’t move forward because I had countless obstacles. These were excuses that I made for myself. I had the ability and the resources. What you look to achieve is closer than what you believe.
If I had one piece of advice to give someone who didn’t know where to start, I’d say that treating yourself better is a good place to begin.
